Who was Mr. Thomas Midgley? How has he impacted every person on this planet?
We need the ozone layer to protect us from UV Radiation. Mr. Thomas Midgley (May 18, 1889 – November 2, 1944), a Mechanical Engineer and Industrial Chemist, has been described as the most destructive man that ever lived. He first developed leaded petrol which was adopted and heavily used globally, the effects of it’s destructive formulation will linger on. He then went on to formulate Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s). Though the harmful effects of leaded petrol were known and eventually banned, the harmful effects of CFC’s were not discovered until 30-years after he passed away. Developed for the most noble reasons: CFC’s presented the world with a non-flammable and non-toxic refrigerant and also found a myriad of other uses such as being used a propellant in spray-on deodorants. Unfortunately it was silently destroying the ozone layer. To put this into perspective, if the protective ozone layer was evenly spread around the globe it would form a layer only 2mm thick. 1kG of CFC destroys 70,000kG of ozone and lasts for 10-years. With this knowledge, Peter Huber began phasing out CFC refrigerants in Huber machines from the mid-1970’s. Our complete range is now available with Natural Refrigerants (NR).
